Keeping water out prevents efflorescence - a guide to caulked movement joints
Efflock prevents efflorescence by repelling water as illustrated in this triangular diagram: Every detail in a system is important. Caulked movement joints may seem an insignificant detail, but if they are installed incorrectly excessive water can enter masonry to cause efflorescence. Below is an information sheet which explains how to install caulked movement joints correctly, with some information on selecting the best sealant for the job:

The advantage of Efflock when building a bathroom
The image below shows a freshly installed bathroom tile bed using Efflock to repel water absorption and lock efflorescence. Efflock provides a primary water barrier over and above relying on a waterproofing membrane alone, and improves the general health and amenity of a bathroom by reducing humidity. For around $30 per bathroom, it's a cost effective insurance policy for both the builder and client. Efflorescence does occur in bathrooms. With the growing trend of underfloor (under tile) heating, the potential for this problem is dramatically increased. The reason for this is that by heating an ordinary saturated tile bed, adhesive and grout, dissolved calcium...

Check out this tile bed!
The photo below shows a flood test of an Efflock tile screed 1 metre x 1 metre wide. Around the perimeter is a 20mm aluminium angle stuck to the surface with silicone, and filled with water. This test was made independently by Don's Tiles in Narellan (near Sydney). At the time this photo was taken, the screed had been flooded for 48 hours (notice on the right hand side one small leak coming from the sealant). Don's Tiles now include Efflock into their bathroom installations because it makes good sense. When an average bathroom costs around $20,000, $30 worth of Efflock is...

Fool Proof & Waterproof Bathroom
This drawing shows one of two methods of where the waterproofing in your bathroom is located. Most typically the waterproofing is located below the screed (as in the right side of the picture). Both methods rely heavily on the membrane because tile grout is porous, and the grout, tile glue and tile screed is saturated permanently with normal daily use. A pinhole in the membrane means big trouble, and regardless, capillary action draws moisture to every corner of your bathroom.Efflock provides another layer of protection by making the porous material water repellent for a drier, less mouldy and efflorescence free...

4000m2 of New Tiling Protected With Efflock
The builder of a large residential apartment complex under construction in Mascot, near Sydney Airport has specified Efflock for over 4000m2 of external tiling around the complex. Project manager, Joe Metlage of Casumo Constructions enquired about Efflock late last month. "Like many builders, we've experienced problems with Efflorescence in the past, and we are excited that Efflock will provide cost effective protection on our projects going forward" he said. Efflock provides permanent protection from efflorescence to external tiling, by simply adding 1% to the water (known as gauging water) before adding to dry ingredients. This dilution should be used for...
